Vision Statement - Comments

Dear Ohio Library Community:

On November 14th, the State Library of Ohio hosted a statewide videoconference to gather feedback for the strategic planning process of the next generation of statewide resource sharing. Over 100 representatives from all types of libraries participated. The feedback sought was in addition to the regional focus group meetings held on October 24 – 26, 2007.

One of the questions discussed during the break out sessions was the vision statement for statewide resource sharing. The finished product includes all recommendations; however, it is not a memorable statement. We encourage you to comment on the following two vision statements for statewide resource sharing in Ohio. What are your recommendations?

Vision statement from videoconference

“Ohio residents, from anywhere, at any time, at no charge, can easily obtain or access -- through quick and reliable delivery -- all locally owned, shareable resources of any Ohio library.”

General vision statement

“Anything from any Ohio library is available from anywhere at anytime to any Ohioan.”

Questions for break-out groups:

1. Here is the vision statement: “All Ohio residents can obtain print and electronic resources of all Ohio libraries at anytime from anywhere.” Is there anything that needs to be added or changed?

2. Having heard the results of the focus groups, do you have any concerns or needs which have not been addressed or identified? Does this make sense? Is this what your customers would like?

3. Is this vision one you can and will support as a statewide initiative?

4. What funding models should be considered? Which model would you prefer? (Pay to play? Contribute on an individual, sliding scale? Lobby with OLC and the State Library for additional earmarked state funding for this effort?)

Statewide Resource Sharing - Video Conference

On Monday May 21, 2007, the first Ohio Library Partnership Summit was held at the Fawcett Center in Columbus, OH. The summit came together as a result of the collaborative work of Libraries Connect Ohio, a partnership between the State Library of Ohio, OPLIN, OhioLINK, and INFOhio. The event drew over 250 library community members. This blog was created to continue the discussion on statewide collaboration and resource sharing.

The State Library is in the process of developing a strategic plan for the next phase in statewide resource sharing. Focus groups met October 24-26, 2007 and discussed current resource sharing systems and provided input for developing a Next-Generation system. The next step is the Statewide Resource Sharing videoconference on November 14 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. For more information about Statewide Resource Sharing, the Next-Generation planning process and registration for the videoconference, please visit this location. Comments about Next Generation of Statewide Resource Sharing in Ohio can be submitted for posting on this blog.

Thank You.
