State-wide library card?

At the summit, several people talked about having a statewide library card, which I think is a great idea, especially for statewide resource sharing. I'd also like to see validation for access to the core electronic databases by both IP address and login (using the statewide card). That way, if you were in Ohio, you could access the databases without logging in (as long as you had an Ohio IP address), but if you were traveling outside Ohio, you could use your username and password. Jo says that statewide IP access is available already, but that it's still a bit clunky.

If one of our primary goals is to collaborate on providing access to electronic databases, I think we should focus on providing easy authentication to those resources without getting bogged down by dicussions of a statewide library card. Ohio libraries have been talking about a statewide library card for a long time. It would take a lot of time and effort just to get that initiative moving. In the meantime the electronic resources initiative would go nowhere.

I do think that in our discussions of electronic resource collaboration we should include a discussion of access methods, because I don't think the current method is very user-friendly. Let's see what we can come up with that would work with our without a statewide library card.

With Michigan and Nebraska library systems, you can login to statewide resources using your driver's license number.
